Commemoration of the First World War in Belgium
The First World War (1914-1918) had a profound impact on history.
Belgium played an important role in this war, not least through the courageous resistance shown by our soldiers during the German invasion. That’s why ‘Poor little Belgium’ earned the admiration of the world.
Belgium will therefore play a central part in the centenary commemorations and will organise a number of national commemorative ceremonies with international scope. Belgium’s various levels of government will organise a range of cultural, artistic, historical and scientific events throughout the period 2014-2018.
The Organising Committee is made up of representatives from:
- the FPS Chancellery of the Prime Minister
- the FPS Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation
- the Ministry of Defence
- the Belgian National Institute for Veterans and Victims of War
